ATADesigns and Wallsmiths are two separate companies that have been working together on Care Home projects since 2018. They both have had people very close to them who required care and dementia was part of that care.

ATADesigns is an award-winning wallcovering/mural design company and Wallsmiths is a printing/consultancy firm. They have worked on several care home projects that include existing care homes and new builds.

Working with the client is crucial to getting a bespoke wallcovering or mural design right.

Rosewood House Care Home for AbleCare in Bristol is one of their recent projects. They helped transform a tired-looking living room into a room the residents now enjoy.

The brief was to create a mural inspired by Bristol and the care home's local surrounding area for a point of reference to the residents.

Further to their meeting with AbleCare's owner and the team, they discussed ideas they would like to see in the mural, such as:

  • Iconic places of interest.
  • Places the residents used to know and like
  • Nature: Parks/birds
  • Sport
  • The care home is opposite a school with a tennis court. The residents like to watch them play tennis.
  • Swimming: Henleaze Lake
  • Colour-ways

They said, "It is critical to get as much information from the client and (if possible) the residents and staff to help form a picture of the design concept".

Any other changes to the room, such as:

  • New curtains
  • New chairs
  • Colour-ways

They also consider this when designing a mural design. They also think about the age range of the residents so that the design works for them equally.

Precise wall measurements are required for bespoke mural designs to fit like a glove.

Every wall space, whether in a care home or not, is different, so during or after any consultation/discussions, ATADesigns and Wallsmiths like to inspect and measure the walls for any imperfections and accuracy before designing. The reason for accurate measurements is:

  • A template of the wall space is made for design purposes.
  • The template will include any doors or windows. These are taken into consideration when designing
  • With all the above in mind, the mural design is created to fit like a glove.

The Mural Design

"When working on a mural design project, staying in contact with the client is a must, just in case there are any further changes to the design from the client" says ATADesigns and Wallsmiths.

For example, for the Rosewood House project, although ATADesigns received all the required information to create the design, there were additional changes from the residents to add.

A final touch to the project as a good gesture, the Care Home owner's dogs were also designed into the mural. "One of the dogs we noticed made a regular appearance to the care home, we noticed the residents liked this and thought it be a lovely touch to add them mural design," says ATADesigns and Wallsmiths.

The mural is printed by Wallsmiths on contract-quality durable wallpaper for commercial use, and installed by AbleCare's maintenance team who did a great job following careful installation instructions.

The staff at Rosewood House says they talk with the residents about the mural for a point of reference.

ATADesigns and Wallsmiths are delighted to receive this quote from the owner at AbleCare:

“We are delighted with our new Bristol-themed mural installed in the lounge at Rosewood House.  It definitely brightens up the room and provides lots of detail and interest for our residents and their guests to spot and talk about.  Annette and Gareth were a pleasure to work with;  Annette captured our ideas around outdoor sports taking place in well-known locations in and around Bristol, from football on the Downs, dog walking at Blaise Castle, swimming at Henleaze Lake to hot air ballooning over Ashton Court.  The colours used in the scheme complement our redecoration and soft furnishing plans brilliantly.  The quality of the printing was flawless, with the production standard making the mural a top quality product for our maintenance team to install.”
